Guerrillas from the Kanbalu District Mobile People’s Defense Force (PDF) and Dhuwan PDF ambushed junta soldiers while they were buying alcohol at a local store in Kanbalu Township of the Sagaing Region.

The exact date and time of the attack remain unclear. At least four soldiers were reportedly killed, while the PDF suffered no casualties. The guerrilla fighters also seized weapons and equipment from the scene.

Footage shared by open sources on Monday shows PDF fighters in the back of a truck encountering junta troops outside a liquor store. The guerrillas opened fire from the truck bed, taking the soldiers by surprise.

According to open source account @war_noir, the PDF used Chinese Type 56-1 rifles, Kachin-made K-09 rifles, and MA-15 machine guns—a locally made version of the German-designed MG3 general-purpose machine gun—in the attack.

Sagaing Region remains a key conflict zone in Myanmar’s civil war, now in its 1,565th day. The war began on March 25, 2021, following the military coup.

According to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, the conflict has killed 82,036 people as of July 4.

The junta has not commented on the Kanbalu ambush.
